The Weight of Unspoken Expectations

April 28, 20263 min read

One of the strangest things about life is that many of our disappointments are never caused by promises.

They are caused by expectations.

Sometimes we expect people to understand us without explanation.

Sometimes we expect our efforts to be noticed.

Sometimes we expect kindness to be returned in the same measure in which we offered it.

And when these expectations are not met, we feel hurt.

What makes it difficult is that the other person often has no idea what expectation existed in the first place.

Over the years, I have realized that expectations are rarely announced. They quietly take shape in our minds and then begin to feel like agreements that everyone else should somehow know about.

The problem is not that expectations exist. They are a natural part of being human.

The problem begins when we mistake our expectations for reality.

Life becomes lighter when we learn the difference between what we hope for and what we are entitled to receive.

People will disappoint us.

Situations will unfold differently than we imagined.

Plans will change.

Yet every time we loosen our grip on an unspoken expectation, we create room for acceptance.

And acceptance, more often than not, weighs far less than disappointment.

Perhaps peace is not found when life matches our expectations.

Perhaps peace is found when we learn to meet life as it is.
