How I Wonder What You Are?

May 17, 20263 min read

Someone shares good news.

A promotion.

A successful business.

A new home.

A book that is doing well.

Almost instantly, we smile and say the right words.

"Congratulations."

"You deserve it."

"I'm so happy for you."

And often, we genuinely mean it.

But sometimes, another voice quietly appears.

A voice we rarely speak about.

"Why them?"

"They're not more talented than I am."

"How did they get there so quickly?"

"I've worked just as hard."

The applause continues on the outside, while a silent comparison begins on the inside.

For a long time, I thought this made people dishonest.

Now, I wonder if it simply makes us human.

Perhaps the mind compares before the heart understands.

Perhaps our first reaction is shaped by our insecurities, disappointments, and unfulfilled dreams. We see another person's success and are reminded of the things we are still waiting for in our own lives.

The important question is not whether that voice appears.

The important question is what happens next.

Do we feed it?

Do we allow comparison to grow into resentment?

Or do we gently acknowledge it and return our attention to gratitude, encouragement, and our own path?

I have come to believe that character is not revealed by our first thought.

It is revealed by the thought we choose to keep.

A passing feeling of envy may visit anyone.

Choosing kindness despite it—that is where growth begins.

The next time you find yourself applauding someone while a small voice whispers otherwise, do not be too quick to judge yourself.

Simply listen carefully.

One voice is speaking from comparison.

The other is speaking from wisdom.

And every day, we get to decide which one deserves the louder applause.
